Nohgaku is a distinctive traditional performing art of Japan, with over 600 years af history. Today, it is registered by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. In Kanazawa, Nohgaku was long beloved by the Maeda Clan, who ruled the Kaga Domani.

Nohgaku Experience

Nohgaku lessons are provided to enhance your enjoyment of the Evening Noh Theater before each performance.
Lessons about the kyogen, hayashi (orchestra), or the chant & dance of the program to be performed that day. Reservation is required.

◆Fee: Free(for those who have a ticket for the next performance)
◆Tabi(traditional Japanese socks): We ask you to wear Tabi, when going on the stage, which are available for rental, free of charge.

Kyogen: Gan Daimyo (Protagonist: Kotaro Sumi)
Noh: Aoi-no-Ue (Protagonist: Genki Sano)

Aoi-no-Ue(Lady Aoi): Aoi-no-Ue(Lady Aoi), Hikaru Genji's wife, is processed by the vengeful phantom of the still-living Rokujo-no-Miyasundokoro(Lady Rokujo). After a rite to call forth ghosts using the sound of a catalpa wood bow, the phantom reveals herself. As the phantom describes her past glory, her jealousy drives her to beat Lady Aoi brutally. Following the sudden deterioration of Lady Aoi's condition, the monk Yokogawa-no-Kohijiri is invited from Mt.Hiei in Kyoto to exorcize the evil spirit. The monk's prayer drives away Lady Rokujo, who has become a demon.

Visiting the Place From the Kenrokuen Gate (East Gate) of Kanazawa Station, get on a bus at platform No.6.Get off the bus at Kenritsu Bijutsukan (Prefectural Museum of Art) or Seisonkaku bus stop (16 min. ride), then walk 1 min.
